AN INSIDER’S VIEW OF THE ART OF DISSENT

An insider's view of this exhibition with ANGELIKA LITTLEFIELD, grand-niece of artist Willy Fick. She will highlight her talk with family anecdotes and will detail how the interface between her greatuncle's archival photos and the responses of Holocaust survivors and young artists brought these bombed-out relics back into the contemporary art world. For those involved in education, the curator's talk will preview some “teachable moments” available in the on-line educational materials. Writer, curator and editor, Angie Littlefield, spent 33 years in the field of education. As Executive Director of the Durham West Arts Centre from 2003-2007, she curated The Thomsons of Durham: Tom Thomson’s Family Heritage. She is currently writing two monologue plays: Late Works of Tom Thomson for the McMichael Gallery for 2009 and Walking with Oma for 2010. The latter work about her Jewish grandmother’s life interweaves the narrative of her grandmother walking from the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp to Hamburg in 1946 with her own experiences of walking the same 700+ km along the Elbe River in the spring of 2008.
